“William and I met at a Thanksgiving party for a debutant ball, here in Macon, called Bons Hommes. We have always known one another from growing up in the same town, going to the same high school and attending Georgia Southern in Statesboro. Because of our age difference of four years, we didn’t know much about each other, other than each other’s name and family. When we started talking that night at the Thanksgiving party, it was an instant connection. We stuck together most of the night talking, dancing and hanging out with some of our friends! I was still at Georgia Southern and he was out working, but we started dating about a month later around New Years. We’ve been together for almost 3 and a half years now!
At the end of August this past fall, I had officially graduated and just completed an internship in Jacksonville, so I was home in Macon for good. On September 2nd, Labor Day weekend, I had been running errands all day, looked pretty rough, but we were planning on going to my Aunt and uncle’s house later that night to celebrate some birthdays in my family with family members that happened to be in town.
As I was out, William text me and said, “We should go out to the river for a walk this afternoon, the weather is so pretty.” My family has a house on the Ocmulgee River, which we go up to all the time, and William’s parents live on the river not too far from my place. When he said this, I thought he meant a walk, like exercising… I wasn’t exactly in the mood to go exercise after all my errands, but I said, “Okay, but let’s go now while I’m gross so I can shower before we go to my cousin’s house.” He was adamant about getting all ready and then going to the river for a “walk.” He clarified that he meant a casual stroll, fix a cocktail, and sit on the porch. I told him “Fine,” so I got ready and we were on our way.
When we got there, we went straight to the porch and sat down. William immediately brought up the first time we met and how crazy it was that we ended up together, and how amazing it has been the past 3 years. Before I knew it, he was down on one knee asking me to marry him. Of course, I said yes!! It was such a perfect evening overlooking the river, the perfect weather, and being with my best friend. This proposal was extremely special to me because it was also where my parents got engaged. He was so thoughtful thinking of a place that means so much to the both of us and incorporating my parent’s engagement. When we left, we celebrated with his family and then to my cousin’s house where we were met with all of my family. It was SUCH a PERFECT day!!”
Congratulations, Helen + William!! xoxo, The OLAS Team
